Rotation Angles Explained
90° Clockwise
The top edge moves to the right side. Used to fix pages scanned sideways with the top pointing left. Most common rotation for correcting landscape scans.
180° Flip
The page turns completely upside down. Used when a document was scanned face-down or when the feeder pulled pages in backwards. Text that was upside down becomes readable.
90° Counter-clockwise
The top edge moves to the left side. Equivalent to 270 degrees clockwise. Used when pages were scanned sideways with the top pointing right.
When Do You Need to Rotate PDF Pages?
Scanned Documents Came Out Sideways
Document feeders on scanners cannot always detect page orientation. Legal-size pages fed sideways, or pages placed incorrectly on the flatbed, produce sideways scans. A single 90-degree rotation corrects the entire batch.
Mixed Landscape and Portrait Pages
Reports containing data tables, charts, or wide diagrams often mix landscape pages into a portrait document. If these pages display incorrectly (requiring head tilting to read), rotating them 90 degrees fixes the viewing experience.
Phone Camera Captures with Wrong Orientation
Photos of documents taken with a phone camera and converted to PDF sometimes have incorrect orientation metadata. The resulting PDF shows pages at the wrong angle, requiring rotation to display correctly.
Preparing for Specific Print Orientation
Certain print formats require specific orientations. Booklet printing, duplex printing, and binding preparation may require pages rotated to match the printer's expected input orientation for correct output.
How PDF Rotation Works Internally
When a PDF page is rotated, only the page's rotation metadata value changes. The internal coordinate system and content data remain untouched. PDF viewers read this rotation value and display the page at the specified angle. This is why rotation is lossless: no pixels are recalculated, no text is re-rendered, and no images are recompressed.

Frequently Asked Questions
How to permanently rotate a PDF so it stays rotated?
Upload your PDF to utilAZ, apply the desired rotation, and download the result. The rotation is embedded in the file itself, so every PDF viewer (Adobe Reader, Chrome, Preview, etc.) will display the pages in the corrected orientation. This is a permanent change in the saved file.
Can I rotate specific pages without affecting others?
Yes. The tool shows thumbnails of all pages. Select only the pages that need rotation and apply the angle. Unselected pages keep their current orientation. This is essential for documents where only one or two pages are sideways.
Does rotation change the page from landscape to portrait?
Visually, yes. A portrait page (taller than wide) rotated 90 degrees becomes landscape (wider than tall) in appearance. The page dimensions effectively swap. A page that was 8.5x11 inches in portrait becomes 11x8.5 inches in landscape after 90-degree rotation.
Why does my PDF viewer rotate temporarily but not save?
Many PDF viewers have a "View Rotation" feature that rotates the display for the current session only without modifying the file. To make rotation permanent, you need to edit the PDF itself (which is what this tool does) rather than just adjusting the viewer's temporary display setting.
Quick Orientation Guide
Text reads left to right but page is sideways: Rotate 90 degrees clockwise (or counterclockwise depending on which direction the text faces).
Everything is upside down: Rotate 180 degrees. This flips the page completely.
Not sure which direction: Try 90 clockwise first. If it makes things worse, apply another 90 (totaling 180) or try counterclockwise from the original.
